On September 2, 1959, Maria underwent a heart catheterization at Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh at the age of five. The procedure revealed two congenital heart defects: partial anomalous pulmonary venous return (PAPVR), in which oxygen-rich blood drained into the right atrium instead of the left, and an atrial septal defect (ASD).
