This Moment with UPMC Children’s Hospital Foundation Ambassadors, T.J. and Dani Watt

Learn more about what inspires Foundation ambassadors T.J. and Dani Watt to support children and families at UPMC Children’s.

What initially inspired you to support UPMC Children’s Hospital Foundation?

What initially inspired us to support UPMC Children’s Hospital Foundation goes back to our time as student athletes at the University of Wisconsin when we would visit the local children’s hospital. Those visits had a huge impact on both of us — seeing the strength, joy, and resilience of those kids really stuck with us. Supporting the Foundation is a way to continue that connection and give back to an organization that’s doing incredible work for children and families every day.

Can you share a story behind a meaningful visit to UPMC Children’s?

One of our most memorable visits to UPMC Children’s was during COVID, when in-person visits weren’t possible. We spent time in the hospital’s Dream Big Studio, taking calls from patients and being game show hosts. It was such a fun and heartwarming experience during a challenging time, and it reminded us how powerful connection can be, even from a distance. The Dream Big Studio is one of many examples of UPMC Children’s commitment to making the children and their families’ stay enjoyable.

How has your connection to the hospital evolved over the years?

I was introduced to the hospital through a Pittsburgh Steelers rookie event. After my visit I remember telling Dani how positive of an experience it was and that we need to get more involved. From the beginning, we have really enjoyed doing bedside visits. Over time, our involvement has evolved beyond just bedside visits. We now help with shopping events for the kids, organizing volunteer opportunities, provide Christmas Day meals for patients and staff, and spend time playing games with patients. Each experience has been incredibly rewarding, allowing us to bring joy not only to the patients but also to their families and the dedicated hospital staff.

As we continue these visits we realize how much the supporting family members also need a visit/break. We have grown such an appreciation for the support system that these little superheroes have. These family members are doing everything they can to stay strong and positive on top of the stress of everyday life. It is awesome to see the smiles of not only the patients but also their support systems.

As ambassadors we want to spread the word of the incredible work UPMC Children’s hospital is doing. Now that we are parents, we have a new perspective when we visit.

Why do you believe it is important to support the hospital now, more than ever?

We believe it’s so important to give back to a hospital that has such a powerful, worldwide impact — one that’s helping children and families from all over. UPMC Children’s plays such a vital role in keeping families together and supported through the toughest times. As parents, knowing what it means to care for a child gives us an even deeper appreciation for the families who rely on the hospital every day. Even if we can make just a small impact, we want to do our part to help make a difference in their lives.

How has your role in the Pittsburgh community influenced your decision to support the Foundation?

Our role in the Pittsburgh community has shown us just how special UPMC Children’s truly is. It’s not only making an incredible impact on kids here in Pittsburgh, but also on children and families who travel from all over the country to receive care. We chose to be a part of the UPMC Children’s Hospital Foundation because it genuinely feels like family — the people, the mission, and the heart behind everything they do align with our own values. There are so many great foundations out there, but this one holds a special place in our hearts. Being able to support something that’s changing lives right here in our community, while also reaching so many others beyond it, is very special.

How do you hope your support will make a difference for the children and families at the hospital?

We hope our support can help bring smiles to the children and families at the hospital and give them a chance to take their minds off what they’re going through, even if it’s just for a brief moment. More than anything, we want them to know that there are people outside the hospital walls cheering them on, believing in them, and supporting them every step of the way. We can only imagine how lonely and overwhelming moments can feel, and if we can be even a small source of comfort or encouragement, that means everything to us.

What message do you have for others who are considering supporting the UPMC Children’s?

It doesn’t take long to do a quick search and see all the incredible good that UPMC Children’s does every single day. However, when you see the impact they’re making on a larger scale, it’s easy to imagine how even a small contribution can help make a big difference. A little truly goes a long way — whether it’s supporting research, funding new technology and systems, areas for patients or helping provide the best possible care for
kids and families. Every bit of support helps continue the amazing work that’s changing lives every day.

What are some of the most rewarding aspects of being ambassadors for the Foundation?

One of the most rewarding parts of being ambassadors for the Foundation is getting to see the incredible progress being made — the improvements, additions, and renovations, and even hearing about future plans firsthand. There’s always something new in the works, and it’s inspiring to witness how dedicated everyone is to constantly enhancing care and comfort for patients and families. But above all, nothing compares to seeing the smiles on the kids’ and families’ faces. Knowing that we’re even a small part of bringing hope and happiness to them is what makes it all so important to us.

What advice would you give to young athletes who want to get involved in philanthropy?

I would tell young athletes that their impact is far greater than they can imagine. The platform that athletics gives to impact the community is an honor and should not be taken lightly. We challenge anyone, not just athletes to get more involved in philanthropy because at the end of the day we are better when we all work together and support each other.

What are your hopes for the children and families who rely on the hospital’s services?

We hope the children and families feel the love and support from the hospital’s services. While we know there are many challenges faced when staying in the hospital, we hope that every patient’s stay is a positive experience for them and their families. We also want them to know that the monetary donations are being put to great use to either provide research for better medicine/treatment or provide amenities to makes their stay more seamless.
