Donors Usher in a New Era of Heart Care

A rendering of the new UPMC Children's Hosptial Heart Institute

With donor support, construction of the new Heart Institute at UPMC Children’s continues on schedule, with plans to open in June 2026!

Making Heart Care Easier for Every Family

The new 50,000-square-foot, three-story Heart Institute will bring innovative clinical excellence, world-class education, and pioneering research together under one roof.

Families will experience a seamless, “one-stop‑shop” model of care, with modern cardiac catheterization labs, a dedicated rehabilitation center, expanded diagnostic and consultation rooms, family-centered waiting areas, and an outpatient clinic capable of increasing care for 20–30 percent more patients.

Construction Progress Continues

Crews are busy advancing interior work, including painting, flooring, and casework. The elevators have been installed, and the bridge linking the new tower to the main hospital is nearly complete.

A Breakthrough in Cardiac Imaging Technology

In November, we reached an exciting milestone with the installation of a state-of-the-art MRI machine, a vital component of cardiology diagnosis and treatment.

The new MRI will improve patient care by providing:

  • Scans that are up to three times faster, resulting in fewer sedated MRIs for kids
  • A helium-free design that reduces environmental impact and operational costs
  • An immersive audio-visual experience to help calm and relax patients during scans

The MRI is the centerpiece of the new MRI-Catheterization Suite and one of a few suites in the country that provides direct access between the catheterization lab and cardiac MRI, allowing special procedures to be performed and reducing x-ray exposure to the patient.

Looking Ahead

As we look ahead to June 2026, your ongoing generosity ensures we can open our doors ready to transform what is possible for kids with heart disease.

Thank you for inspiring hope in every heartbeat!
