Clinical Excellence

UPMC Children’s has been a global pioneer in pediatric health care and scientific innovation for over 130 years. What began as a single pediatric bed in an adult hospital, made possible by the fundraising efforts of an 11-year-old boy in the 1870s, has grown into a beacon of hope to families around the world.

Generous corporations, foundations, fundraising partners, and donors have positioned UPMC Children’s as a model of excellence in clinical care, research, child and family advocacy, and exceptional education for the next generation of pediatricians.

UPMC Children’s consistently ranks among the top 10 out of nearly 200 pediatric hospitals across the country on the U.S. News & World Report Honor Roll of America’s Best Children’s Hospitals. All of UPMC Children’s subspecialties were also ranked for excellence, four of which earned top 10 rankings:

  • Cardiology and heart surgery (#8)
  • Diabetes and endocrinology (#5)
  • Gastroenterology and GI surgery (#10)
  • Nephrology (#9)
  • Pulmonology and lung surgery (#9)
  • Urology (#9)

Attaining this level of excellence requires much more than health care reimbursements. Charitable donations make the difference in transforming an excellent regional hospital into an extraordinary, state-of-the-art facility that treats children from around the world. Without donations, these rankings and the outstanding care they symbolize would not be possible.
